What is a vCard and how does it work?

A vCard (Virtual Contact File, standard extension .vcf) is a file format standard for electronic business cards. It was developed by the Internet Mail Consortium in the late 1990s and remains the universal standard for sharing contact information between devices, operating systems, and email clients. vCard files can be shared via email attachment, QR code, link, AirDrop, or NFC, and every major contact application, iOS Contacts, Android Contacts, Outlook, Gmail, macOS Contacts, and Thunderbird, can import them directly.

When someone receives your vCard, they can add you to their contacts with a single tap, pre-filling all fields you specified. This is much faster and more accurate than typing contact details manually, and eliminates transcription errors that frustrate follow-up communication. For sales professionals, event exhibitors, and networkers, providing a vCard via QR code at the point of contact improves the likelihood that your details are saved correctly.

This tool generates a vCard 3.0 file, the most universally supported version. Version 4.0 adds some additional fields and photo support but is not supported by all older clients. The file is built locally in your browser and downloaded directly, your contact details are never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my photo to the vCard?

vCard 3.0 supports base64-encoded photos, but files with embedded photos become very large (typically 50-200 KB) and compatibility varies. This tool does not include photo embedding to keep files lightweight and universally compatible.

How do I share a vCard via QR code?

Download the .vcf file, host it somewhere (e.g. GitHub, your website, a cloud storage link), then create a QR code pointing to that URL using our QR Generator tool.

What is the difference between vCard 3.0 and 4.0?

Version 4.0 adds support for time zones, gender, anniversary, multiple types per field, and URI references. Version 3.0 is more universally supported across all clients and is the right choice for broad compatibility.
