When to use each text case
UPPERCASE is used for acronyms (URL, NASA, API), emphasis in certain design contexts, and all-caps button labels in some UI frameworks. It is generally inappropriate for body text as it reduces readability.
Title Case capitalises the first letter of major words (nouns, verbs, adjectives) while leaving minor words (articles, prepositions, conjunctions) lowercase. It is used for book titles, article headlines, and headings in formal documents. The implementation here follows AP Style, minor words under four letters are not capitalised unless they are the first or last word.
camelCase (lowerCamelCase) starts lowercase and capitalises each subsequent word with no separator. It is the dominant convention for variable and function names in JavaScript, Java, and most C-family languages. PascalCase (UpperCamelCase) starts with an uppercase letter and is used for class names, constructors, and React component names.
snake_case uses underscores as separators and is the convention in Python, Ruby, SQL column names, and many file systems. kebab-case uses hyphens and is used in CSS class names, HTML attributes, URL slugs, and the file naming conventions of many web frameworks including Vue.js and the Jamstack ecosystem.
Frequently asked questions
What is sentence case?
Sentence case capitalises only the first letter of the first word in a sentence and proper nouns. It is the standard for body copy, UI labels, and most modern web writing style guides.
Does this preserve existing capitalisation for proper nouns?
For most conversions, the text is fully lowercased first, so existing capitalisation of proper nouns is not preserved. Review the output for names and acronyms.
