Types of logo and when to use each

A wordmark (or logotype) is a typographic logo consisting solely of your company name in a distinctive typeface and color. Wordmarks work best when your company name is distinctive and not too long, think Google, Coca-Cola, or FedEx. They are fast to implement, scalable at any size, and require no icon design. The downside is that they rely entirely on typographic choice and color for differentiation.

A monogram uses one or two initials set inside a shape (circle, square, or rounded rectangle). Monograms work particularly well as app icons, favicon alternatives, and social media profile images where square or circular formats are preferred. They condense a long company name into a memorable single mark.

A badge combines a monogram icon with the full company name for the best of both worlds: the icon provides scalable brand recognition while the name provides context. This is the most versatile logo format for most startups and small businesses.
